SAINT PETER OF BURGO DE OSMA
Bishop (+1109) [August 2]A native of Berry, France, Peter gave up a military career to enter the reformed French monastery of Cluny, after which he was sent to Spain to help introduce the Cluniac reform in the monastery of Sahagun. In 1101 he was consecrated bishop of Osma and devoted his energies to the administration of the sacraments, especially the hearing of confessions. He also saw to the reconstruction of dilapidated churches in his diocese, including the building of a new cathedral. Each year Peter would return to his monastery at Sahagun to spend several days in spiritual exercises, stopping along the way at Palencia to pass an entire night in prayer beneath the tomb of the martyr Saint Antolin, to whom he was particularly devoted.
